Silent Sentinel: A Half Century of Minuteman On Alert

Courtesy 30th Space Wing Public Affairs Vandenberg AFB

2013 will mark the 51st year of the first Minuteman I ICBMs being placed "on alert" during the Cuban Missile Crisis. At the time, President John F. Kennedy famously referred to the missiles as his "ace in the hole." Today, the Minuteman III missiles remain in service as America's only land-based strategic deterrent and stand ready 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The most recent test launch of the missile system was in November.
