Boeing has set aggressive and transparent enterprisewide performance targets to drive environmental thought and action throughout its operations. By 2012 at its major manufacturing facilities, Boeing targets 25 percent improvement goals for solid waste recycling rates, energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions intensity; and a comparable goal for hazardous waste reduction.
The company has committed to continue its dedication to environmental design innovation by:
- Ensuring each new commercial airplane generation delivers at least a 15 percent improvement in carbon dioxide emissions and fuel efficiency.
- Directing more than 75 percent of commercial airplanes research and development to benefit environmental performance.
This commitment is exemplified in the company's newest commercial airplanes, the 787 Dreamliner and the 747-8, which are both designed to be more fuel and CO2-efficient than the airplanes they replace.
