Group 1A RFI Report

Summary

The Group 1A RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI) report is scheduled to be submitted to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) in February 2009. Group 1A is located in the northeast corner of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) and lies in Area I and portions of the southern undeveloped land area. Group 1A includes 8 RFI sites including 2 engine test stands, several research and testing laboratories, one landfill, and the former employee shooting range. The principal Solid Waste Management Units (SWMUs) include: the B-1 Area, the Area I Landfill, the Advanced Propulsion Test Facility (APTF), the Laser Engineering Test Facility/Component Test Lab I (LETF/CTL I), the Canyon Test Stand Area, Happy Valley, the Instrument and the Equipment Lab (IEL) and the former Rocketdyne Employee Shooting Range.

Group 1B RFI Report

Summary

The Group 1B RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI) report is scheduled to be submitted to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) in September 2009. Group 1B is located in the east-central portion of the SSFL and lies in Area I and the eastern portion of the southern undeveloped land area. The Group 1B area is bounded to the north and west by Groups 2, 3 and 4, and to the east by Group 1A. Group 1B includes 6 RFI sites including one engine test stand, two research and testing laboratories, two surface water ponds, and one open-burn/open detonation facility. The principal Solid Waste Management Units (SWMUs) include: the Bowl Test Stand (Bowl), Component Test Lab III (CTL-III), Component Test Lab V (CTL-V), the Perimeter Pond, R-1 Pond, Area I Burn Pit (AIBP), and the Thermal Treatment Facility (TTF). A separate RFI Work Plan has been prepared for the AIBP. Based on a review of historical records, no industrial or research based activities were conducted in the southern undeveloped land area.

Summary

The Group 2 RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI) report is scheduled to be submitted to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) in December 2008. Group 2 is located in the north-central portion of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) and includes part of Area I, Area II, NASA Area I and a portion of the northern undeveloped land area. Group 2 is bounded on the south and west by Group 3, on the east by Group 1A, and on the north by the American Jewish University, Brandeis-Bardin Campus and the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) Sage Ranch Park. Group 2 includes 5 RFI sites including the Liquid Oxygen Plant (LOX), the Area II Landfill, the Expendable Launch Vehicle Final Assembly (ELV), Building 515 Sewage Treatment Plant (B515 STP) and the Area II Incinerator Ash Pile.

Summary

The Group 3 RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI) report is scheduled to be submitted to Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) in May 2009. Group 3 is located in the central portion of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) and includes a large portion of Area II (NASA) and small portions of Areas I and III (Boeing). Group 3 is bounded on the west by Groups 6 and 9, on the east by Group 1B, on the north by the Group 2, and on the south by Group 4. Group 3 includes 7 RFI sites including two large rocket engine testing areas, four storage areas, and one facility maintenance area. The Solid Waste Management Units (SWMUs) include: the Building 204 Area (B204), Hazardous Waste Storage Tank Area (HWSA), Waste Coolant Tank (WCT), Alfa Area, Bravo Area, Storable Propellant Area (SPA), and Alfa/Bravo Fuel Farm (ABFF).

Group 4 RFI Report

Summary

The Group 4 RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI) report was the second RFI report submitted to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). Group 4 is located roughly in the center of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) and lies completely within Area II (NASA owned land). The Group 4 reporting area includes 3 RFI sites: the Coca Area (Coca), the Delta Area (Delta), and the Propellant Load Facility (PLF). The Coca and Delta areas were used for large rocket engine testing, and the PLF was used for Peacekeeper Missile loading/unloading operations. The Group 4 RFI report was submitted to DTSC in August 2007 and is currently under review by DTSC staff.

Group 5 RFI Report

Summary

The Group 5 RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI) report is scheduled to be submitted to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) in November 2008. Group 5 is located in the western portion of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) and lies primarily in Area IV with portions in Area II, Area III, and the southern undeveloped land area. Group 5 includes 16 RFI sites including four research and testing laboratories, three facilities for support of Area IV nuclear energy operations, two materials testing and production facilities, two storage areas, three leach field areas, one pond dredge disposal site, and one sewage treatment plant. The principal Solid Waste Management Units (SWMUs) include: the Systems Test Laboratory IV (STL-IV), Compound A Facility, Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Pond, Environmental Effects Laboratory (EEL), Engineering Chemistry Lab (ECL), Southeast (SE) Drum Storage Yard, Boeing Leach Field (LF), Rockwell International Hot Laboratory (RIHL), Systems for Nuclear Auxillary Power (SNAP), Hazardous Materials Storage Area (HMSA), Coal Gasification Process Development Unit (PDU), Pond Dredge, Building 100 (B100) Trench, Department of Energy (DOE) Leach Field 1, DOE Leach Field 3, Building 008 (B008) Warehouse, and Metals Laboratory Clarifier.

The principal Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) in the Group is the Radioactive Materials Handling Facility (RMHF) site. Also included in this Group is Building 029.

Group 9 RFI Report

Group 9 is located in the southwestern portion of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) and includes portions of Areas II, III, IV and the western portion of the southern undeveloped land area. Group 9 includes 3 RFI sites including three surface water ponds, and a fuel storage area. The principal Solid Waste Management Units (SWMUs) include: the Silvernale Reservoir, the R-2A and R-2B ponds, and the Coca-Delta Fuel Farm (CDFF). Based on a review of historical records, no industrial or research based activities were conducted in the southern undeveloped land area.
