The Boeing Company has several contracts that support the research and development (R&D) of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). These contracts are ITER Shielding Blanket, ITER Divertor, and PISCES-Upgrade. Boeing is the prime contractor on these contracts, with several subcontractors working under Boeing supervision on specific R&D tasks. There are other contracts issued to industrial/ laboratory/ university teams to conduct ITER-related R&D within the United States, the European Union, Japan, and the Russian Federation. The ITER project is a very technically challenging project that requires the resources and skills of these multi-national teams. The design of the ITER reactor is very involved as noted in the following figure. Click on the figure to view at a larger size.

In order for the ITER team to complete the Engineering Design Assessment (EDA) phase and draw upon the strengths of a broad industrial base, the ITER management (through the Office of Fusion Energy Science, OFES) issued design services contracts to supplement the design staff at the three ITER Joint Work Sites. A US ITER Industrial Consortium was formed of eleven industrial firms to support this work. Raytheon Engineers and Constructors is the team leader, handles the administrative duties, and contributes to the technical tasks. The consortium consists of the following firms:
For each of the major ITER subsystems, a single industrial firm was selected as the design team leader, with two or more supporting firms. Boeing is the design leader in four areas, mainly involving plasma facing components, first wall/blanket/shield designs, and a fusion materials database. More information on those specific areas can be found on the pages describing the specific design contracts noted below. Because of the similarity of topics on the R&D and the design efforts, these contract activities have been grouped together in these referenced pages.
The Boeing Program Manager for the overall ITER Engineering Design Services contract is Lester M. Waganer, although each of the tasks have their own Boeing task leader as noted in the information pages.
