Upgrades/Enhancements (BHMS Release 3.6)

BHMS release 3.6 contains contains significant upgrades and new features since the last major release 3.0 . The most significant of these changes is a 24 link spine and increase in manikin body measurements from 14 to 105. The new spine greatly increases the mobility of the manikin in all reach type access studies.  The additional measures increase the accuracy of the manikins anthropometric dimensions. Following is a list of the release 3.6 new and improved features:

  • Six new populations:
    • Four Dutch populations
    • Two Japanese populations
  • 105 Input Body Measures:  Integrated with multi-variate estimator.
  • Expanded Multivariate Estimator with up to 105 input dimensions and improved manikin creation interface.
  • All new manikin dynamic enfleshment for spine, neck and shoulders:  Manikin created based on up to 105 input dimensions: Improves fit/clearance analysis and appearance.
  • 24 Link Spine:  Includes slider bar and inverse kinematic motion control of spine motion.
  • Spine motion in 3 modes:
    • Arm
    • Arm + Shoulder
    • Arm + Shoulder + Spine
    • (This is controlled via the Setup Control Panel.)
  • Slider Bars to control groups of spine links:
    • Head/Neck (controls C1-C7 links)
    • Torso (controls S1-T1 links)
    • Lumbar (controls S1-L1 links)
    • Full Spine (control S1-C1 links)
    • Pelvic Link (controls S1 link)
    • Head Link (controls HEAD link)
  • Anthropometric Standing and Sitting Postures:
    • Attempts to adjust the spine of the manikin to make stature and sitting height equal to original measured manikin.
    • Aligns line of sight plane with floor plane for a more accurate sitting posture.
  • Motion Anchor Points (MAPS):  Allows users to define the Tailbone (default), Head, R/L hand, R/L Knee, R/L Foot as anchors while slider bars move links to increase flexibility and ease of posturing manikins.
  • Dynamic Related Joint Limits (DRJL):  Relates legs to spine for more realistic motion.
  • Create a Control Reference Point (CRP) in Create Positioning Reference Point Interface: Ease of use feature that aids in creation of tag points based on manikins current position.
  • LookAt Interface: Allows manikin to animate 7 links of Head/Neck to align center eye to a reach goal.
  • Head Tracking: Head motion tracks goal during the animated simulation of a reach attempt.
  • VPS Collision Detection:  Increases speed, with one minor interface modification.
  • VPS Swept Volumes:  Capability to sweep parts through motion paths or manikin limbs through reach paths to create faceted 3D volumes of the swept area. A new interface was created to implement this feature.  The Swept Volumes and Collision Detection features make use of the Voxel Point Shell (VPS) library authored by the Applied Research and Technology group of Phantom Works from Boeing in Seattle.
  • Decimation of polygons (GE Software) in a part within Create Device module. Extended capability to decimate all parts within a device.
  • Cull Backface polygons.
  • Main Window Slider Bars to control panning.
  • Workfile Function Enhancements:
    • Reposture manikin: Change posture of manikin via workfile.
    • Motion Reposture manikin: Animate between postures.
    • Special Auxiliary Functions:  (settings with workfile)
      • Dof = 7, 9, 57   (arm,  arm+shoulder,  arm+shoulder+spine)
      • Leg Type = HIP or ANKLE:  Access to enhanced leg motion algorithms
      • Look At Goal:  Animate motion of head to look at goal and coincide with hand reach to goal.
      • Set Coupled Manikin:  Switch between manikin receiving action of workfile.
      • Locked Axis Constraints: Allows access to special used tools such as speed wrenches
    • Constraints can be set and reset during workfile execution.
  • Ability for Space-Suited Manikins to run in the applications/simulations.
  • Environment File:  Reads environment to restore previous modeling environment at run time with the following capabilities:
    • Load workcell files (geometry)
    • Load multiple manikins
    • Apply initial postures for loaded manikins.
    • Set background color.
    • Set initial scene orientation
    • Print Manikin Joint angles
  • 3D Geometry File Readers:
    • FlyThru  (Boeing proprietary format)
  • VRML 2.0  (capability exists to convert VRML 1.0 to VRML 2.0)
