Case Study 1 - Pilot Reach Accommodation

BHMS Facilitates Definition of DesignRequirements
In designing cockpit control layout, engineers use BHMS' reach envelope feature to define pilot reach requirements. Boeing has used the BHMS Population Sample Generation and Reach Envelope features to facilitate definition of design requirements for cockpit control layout. A typical application is outlined below:

  1. A synthetic population sample is generated which accurately represents the civilian pilot population with a stature range from 5'2" to 6'3" from one of BHMS' seven anthropometric data bases using a Monte Carlo process.
  2. A reach envelope is generated for the population sample. BHMS' reach envelope is a surfaced volume within which all members of the population sample can reach.
  3. The reach envelope is sent to the host CAD system and overlaid on the cockpit geometry to define requirements in quantitative form. The reach envelope serves as a "design-to" requirement for control placement to ensure successful pilot performance.
