Group 6 RFI Report

Summary

The Group 6 RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI) report was the first of 11 Group RFI reports submitted to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). The Group 6 reporting area includes 4 RFI sites: the Old Conservation Yard (OCY), the New Conservation Yard (NCY), the Sodium Reactor Experiment (SRE) and the Building 064 Leach Field (B064 LF). The OCY was used for storage of salvageable material, construction waste, transformers and diesel fuel oil. The NCY was used for salvageable material storage, document incineration, and contained an alpha/beta counting lab. B064LF was a leach field for sanitary waste. The SRE area contained a nuclear power reactor, fuel oil storage, gasoline and diesel underground storage tanks (USTs), a sanitary leach field, and hot oil/sodium component cleaning operations. All facilities and most support structures have been removed from the Group 6 reporting area. The report was submitted in September 2006 and is under review by DTSC.

Group 4 RFI Report

Summary

The Group 4 RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI) report was the second RFI report submitted to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). Group 4 is located roughly in the center of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) and lies completely within Area II (NASA owned land). The Group 4 reporting area includes 3 RFI sites: the Coca Area (Coca), the Delta Area (Delta), and the Propellant Load Facility (PLF). The Coca and Delta areas were used for large rocket engine testing, and the PLF was used for Peacekeeper Missile loading/unloading operations. The Group 4 RFI report was submitted to DTSC in August 2007 and is currently under review by DTSC staff.

Group 8 RFI Report

Summary

The Group 8 RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI) report was the third report submitted to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). Group 8 includes 4 RFI sites: the Building 056 landfill (B056), the Empire State Atomic Development Authority (ESADA), the Building 009 Leach Field (B009 LF) and the Former Sodium Disposal Facility (FSDF). B056 was used for disposal of construction-related wastes; the ESADA was used for pipe-strength testing and drum storage; the B009 LF received sanitary and liquid waste from building 009 (a nuclear research facility); and the FSDF was used for disposal and treatment of sodium and sodium/potassium mixtures. The Group 8 report was submitted to DTSC in September 2007 and is under review by DTSC.
