John Shank is Vice President of Federal Legislative Affairs for The Boeing Company's Government Operations office in Washington, D.C. In this role, Mr. Shank is responsible for implementing and overseeing all Boeing strategic and tactical interactions with the United States Congress and related Federal agencies. In conjunction with Boeing's senior leaders, business units, and other elements of government operations, Mr. Shank and his team work to secure legislative and financial support for Boeing's business activities and programs from the Congress.

From June 2009 until August 2012, Mr. Shank served as Vice President of Appropriations for The Boeing Company's Government Operations office. Prior to this role, Mr. Shank served as a Principal of the Podesta Group from June 2008-May 2009.

Mr. Shank's government service includes approximately 27 years in Congress. Most recently, he served as minority staff director for the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense in 2007-2008. He served as staff director for the subcommittee under Chairman C.W. Bill Young of Florida in 2005-2006. When he first joined the subcommittee in 2003 he was responsible for review of the budget and programs of the Central Intelligence Agency and Defense Intelligence Agency.

Mr. Shank's service in the U.S. House of Representatives began in 1995 on the staff of the Committee on Appropriations, then chaired by Bob Livingston of Louisiana. He was assigned to the Subcommittee on Foreign Operations then chaired by Sonny Callahan of Alabama and later by Jim Kolbe of Arizona. He was staff director (clerk) of the subcommittee under Chairman Kolbe. His responsibilities included review of the foreign assistance programs of the Department of State, U.S. Agency for International Development, and Department of Treasury, including oversight of activities in the Middle East, South Asia, Europe and Eurasia, and East Asia. He was also primary staff lead on the military assistance programs implemented by the Department of Defense.

From 1982 - 1994 Mr. Shank served on the staff of the Senate Appropriations Committee and was assigned to the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and State. He served under full committee chairman Mark O. Hatfield of Oregon throughout this period, and as staff assistant to subcommittee chairmen Lowell P. Weicker of Connecticut and Paul Laxalt of Nevada. In 1986 he became subcommittee staff director (clerk) under Chairman Warren Rudman of New Hampshire. From 1987 through 1992 John served as minority clerk to Senator Rudman and as minority clerk to Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico in 1993-1994.

Mr. Shank served on the staff of Congressman Al Ullman of Oregon in 1979-1980 and worked for a private sector consulting firm from 1980-1982.

Mr. Shank was born in Seattle, Washington. He attended public schools in Campbell River, British Columbia; Ocean Falls, British Columbia.; and Camas, Washington and graduated cum laude from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in political science. He attended graduate school at the University of Chicago where he studied international relations and political philosophy. John resides in McLean, Virginia with his wife Andrea and their three sons.
