Boeing Technology Services -- Interior Noise Test Facility

Boeing conducts structural acoustics testing on aircraft fuselages in the Interior Noise Test Facility (INTF).

This facility features both an anechoic and a reverberant chamber and is designed to test and measure noise from environmental control systems and hydraulic systems. The INTF can accommodate testing systems and complete aircraft fuselage sections.

Specifications:

Anechoic Chamber Characteristics:

  • Chamber size: 58 feet x 41 feet x 31 feet high wedge tip to wedge tip
  • Chamber construction: double wall
  • Operating frequency range: 100 Hz to 80 kHz
  • Chamber absorption coefficient: 0.99 at 100 Hz and above. Meets ANSI S12.35 - 1990. Details of the test can be found in NTL5501 - 29, the anechoic room checkout document found in the INTF control room.
  • Air system: The room has an air conditioning system, air supply system, a vacuum system, and a fuselage pressurization system.

Reverberant Chamber Characteristics:

  • Chamber size: 35 feet x 29 feet x 22 feet 9 inches high
  • Chamber construction: double wall
  • Operating frequency range: For rigorous sound absorption tests: 160 Hz to 2 kHz. For transmission loss tests: 160 Hz. to 5000 Hz.
  • Chamber absorption coefficient: typically less than 0.06 below 2000 Hz. Increases above 2000 Hz. due to air absorption.
  • Air system: The room has an air conditioning system, air supply system, a vacuum system, and a fuselage pressurization system.

The facility's anechoic and reverberant chambers are joined by a unique 10 x 10 foot window, and can be used in testing transmission loss. Noise can be generated at the same time inside and outside of the section being tested. This facility:

  • Generates sound fields on panels and fuselage exteriors
  • Measures noise from ECS and hydraulic systems
  • Includes Data system that acquire and processes pressure, temperature, and vibro-acoustic information
  • Provides air sources and vacuum
  • Runs environmental control and hydraulic systems
  • Handles very high heat loads like those that occur when engine bleed air is being conditioned for use in an aircraft cabin.
