Anne Kao

Senior Technical Fellow, Data Analytics
Seattle, Washington

"Leading data analytics at Boeing, I create text mining and data analytics applications that people use to design amazing products for aerospace. As a Senior Technical Fellow, the highest rank on Boeing’s technical track, I push the boundaries of analytics and design methods to extract key information from hundreds of sources. I get to work directly with users to solve challenging problems in the aerospace industry, and that gives me a breadth and depth that no software company can possibly match.

I recently created a tool that can read millions of aircraft maintenance reports (with loads of non-standard or misspelled words) and then identify maintenance issues and actions automatically. It’s a partnership that allows the Boeing team to leverage the machines for what they do best and let people do what they do best—make our products even better, faster and more efficient."

System Design and Integration Specialist

"My input helps the IT leadership team and Corporate Development make decisions about whether or not to bring on new partners, products and services—any of which could be a game changer for the company. I have a lot of pride when Boeing announces an acquisition because I know I have played an important role in the decision-making process and the security of the IT system."

"Boeing is taking a stance as a front runner in the IT industry. We’re doing this by taking advantage of certain aspects of cloud technologies.

When you’re driving down the road and you see the gas light come on in your car, the same thing applies to an airplane when it lands on the ground. There’s going to be a certain number of signals that are sent. We can pull those messages from the plane and deliver the appropriate information to help people understand what might need to be maintained. The purpose of the cloud and what we’ve been using this for is to deliver information at a speed and performance level that is unparalleled—uploading our information to the customer as soon as possible.

At Boeing, you’ve got a company that supplies some of the coolest products out there. You’ve got the planes, missiles, satellites, and communications. And you’ve got a company that’s not just regional, but global as well. What we’re allowed to do on the IT front is apply IT to those products and push them farther than they’ve gone before. "
