Test & Evaluation Engineers Profiles

Hear what our Test & Evaluation engineers have to say about Boeing.

Steve Brown

Steve Brown

Lead Instrumentation Engineer
Seattle, Washington

"Every day in flight test, we ensure Boeing airplanes are the safest and most efficient to fly. My team works with design engineers to collect flight-test data that they can use to continually improve Boeing products. It can be challenging work. Some days it means diligently checking the performance of thousands of airplane system components while at cruising altitude. Other days it means monitoring systems while the airplane flies in ways that would spill a lot of coffee if paying customers were on board. Today's technology allows us to collect and analyze hundreds of times more data than when I started at Boeing 23 years ago—so much data, that we remove all passenger accommodation to make space for our equipment and build our own in-airplane intranet.

My learning began long ago. I was only 22 years old when I joined Boeing, and I remember my first day working with engineers who worked on the 707 and Apollo programs. I am thankful to them for creating an environment that expects and delivers great products. Now, I have the honor of working with some incredibly talented young people, and I work to live up to the example and expectation of the great engineers before me."

Test Pilot
Ridley Park, Pennsylvania

“I served 9 years as a Naval Aviator, and there actually were a good number of women pilots. In my squadron, there were 8 pilots. And my last flight was with an all-female crew in an H-46. And since I flew in the military, I know exactly what to look for and what the customer is looking for during testing. It gives me pride to know that I'm helping.”

Keith Otsuka

Keith Otsuka

Chief Pilot, Boeing Commercial Airplanes
Seattle, Washington

“In a lineup, the test pilot would be the guy with the pocket protector. We are the geeks of the pilot world. We tend to have engineering backgrounds, and we have that inquisitiveness about why things work the way they do. It makes us different from people who just fly airplanes. Our goal at the end of the day is to take something potentially risky, and manage the risk. Risk-taking does not necessarily make a good test pilot.”

Test Engineer, Phantom Eye
St. Louis, Missouri

“I’m probably the youngest person on the test team. I was only at Boeing for a few months before I started on the Phantom Eye program. It was definitely intimidating at first, since everybody knows their systems really well and I still had to learn mine. This is a great experience. I get to see all of these test operations and travel. I really enjoy it.”

Charles Bailey

Charles Bailey

Test Engineer, C-17
St. Louis, Missouri

“I worked as an airline pilot for 34 years, 11 of which were spent flying and instructing on the 767. When I retired, I wanted a new challenge. I was hired as test director of the KC-767 tanker program, and then I moved to the C-17 Globemaster III test engineering program, where my job is to ensure that the C-17 simulators and other training devices work just like the real aircraft. My co-workers and I write test procedures, meet with customers, and show them how the hardware and software works. Having a good rapport with the customer and establishing trust are crucial. Every workday brings new challenges that I get to solve. It seems my whole life has been flying and engineering—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
