Perspective

Welcome to the first edition of AERO, the quarterly technical magazine for airplane customers of the new Boeing Company. Created following the merger of Boeing and McDonnell Douglas, AERO replaces the former Airliner and Douglas Service magazines. It is a visible sign of the effort to unite the resources of both organizations for a common purpose: To create a single, world-class airplane product support network for Boeing- and Douglas-designed airplanes.

Like its predecessors, the mission of AERO is to provide our customers with timely supplemental technical information that supports safe and efficient commercial fleet maintenance and operations. In creating it, we blended what we think are the best qualities of both former publications with reader suggestions from recent surveys. We hope former Airliner readers will enjoy features familiar to Douglas Service readers, such as this regular viewpoint column and the customer airline history in this issue ("SAS: The United Nations of the Air"). Likewise, we hope former Douglas Service readers will benefit from the technical depth and breadth of product and industry articles that were the hallmark of Airliner.

In a first for either of our former publications, the new Boeing technical magazine is now available in English on the World Wide Web through the Boeing home page. We hope this will make access easier for our English-language readers around the world.

As evidenced by the article "The Future of Customer Support," our effort to create AERO -- like the other elements that will constitute our single customer support network -- is a work in progress. Your input is extremely important to this endeavor. Please feel free to contact our editor, Leslie Nichols, at (206) 544-8237 or by email at aeromagazine@boeing.com.

May you enjoy reading this first edition of AERO as much as we enjoyed designing and publishing it.
