What are Boeing Digital Technical Documents?
Boeing has converted key manuals into Portable Data Format (PDF) files, and packaged each manual on a separate compact disc. Adobe® Reader® is required to open the files.
The key manuals are the:
- Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM)
- Fault Isolation Manual (FIM)
- Fault Repair Manual (FRM)
- Aircraft Illustrated Parts Catalog (AIPC)
- Structural Repair Manual (SRM)
- System Schematic Manual (SSM)
- Wiring Diagram Manual (WDM)
- Standard Wiring Practices Manual (SWPM)
- Maintenance Planning Data (MPD)
- On-Aircraft Maintenance Planning (OAMP)
- Task Cards
An application is available that provides a user interface for single point of installation and access for all Technical Documents manuals.
How do they work?
Each manual is reproduced in a page-by-page format, as an exact replica of the paper manual. Not only can these replace paper or microfilm formats, but the Adobe® Reader® software supports word and number searches as well. Further, you can copy and paste text and graphics from each manual into other applications.
How do I get them?
These digital manuals are available either for purchase or as the format of choice for your existing or future document entitlements. If you had the option of receiving these manuals in either paper or microfilm formats before, you now have the option of receiving them in Boeing Digital Technical Document form instead. You can choose one of our digital formats or a combination of paper and microfilm for your entitlement, and then purchase any of the remaining formats as required.
How do I order them?
Please contact your Boeing Digital Data Customer Support group (206-544-9990) or send an email to me.boecom@boeing.com. Please include the document number of the manual you wish to order.
What models of airplanes are supported in this format?
707, 717, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, DC-8, DC-9, DC-10, MD-10, MD-11, MD-80, MD-90. Please note that not all manuals are available for all models. Please review the Boeing Data and Services Catalog for availability.
When are these manuals available?
Many manuals are currently available and we will continue to provide additional manuals and customers. Please review the Data and Services Catalog for current offerings.
What software do I need to have to use Boeing Digital Technical Documents?
The product is delivered to an airline customer with the Boeing Digital Technical Documents application. This application is used to install and to navigate through a document. Adobe® Reader®, version 6 or higher is needed to open the files.
Can I install different versions of reader on my PC?
Adobe® does not recommend having multiple versions of Adobe® Reader® installed on the same machine. If you choose to install multiple versions of Reader®, Boeing cannot guarantee support of the Boeing Digital Technical Documents application.
I understand that Boeing Digital Technical Documents are CD-based. Can I also load and view these manuals on a network server?
Yes. These digital manuals can run on a Windows® NT server with a Windows® 2000 or NT client. Documentation is provided on each CD describing the process for properly loading Boeing Digital Technical Documents onto a server. The PDF file format is ideal for concurrent accesses and for transferring files across networks.
Can I uninstall Temporary Revisions (TR) or Airline Revisions (AR) with the Technical Documents Version 2 application?
To remove TR's or AR's, you must manually delete the applicable TR or AR files using Windows Explorer.
After I install a document, TR or AR, the application does not show the installed document. How do I show all installed documents?
After you install a document, TR, or AR, you must use the Refresh feature of the application to show newly installed documents. Click Refresh from the View menu, or select the F5 function key to show all installed documents.
Temporary Revisions are delivered on floppy diskette as a file with a .pk3 extension. What is a .pk3 file?
A .pk3 file is a zip archive with a .pk3 file extension. The zip archive contains the PDF Temporary Revision and a .tr3 configuration file. The .tr3 configuration file is used by the application to associate the Temporary Revision with the correct document and chapter. To install the Temporary Revision using the application, follow these steps:
- 1. Insert the CD in the CD drive.
- 2. Start the Boeing Digital Technical Documents application.
- 3. Select Add Temporary/Airline Revisions from the Document menu.
- 4. When the dialog box shows, click on the Temporary Revision (it will end with a .pk3 file extension).
- 5. After the Temporary Revision has been added, select Refresh from the View menu in the Boeing Digital Technical Documents application.
To view the Temporary Revision, open the chapter affected by the Temporary Revision in the Boeing Digital Technical Documents application and double click on the Temporary Revision.
You can access the contents of the .pk3 file without the Boeing Digital Technical Documents application using an unzip utility like WinZip. To open the zip archive and view the PDF, follow these steps:
- 1. Insert the CD in the CD drive.
- 2. Start your unzip utility (e.g., WinZip). The unzip utility is not provided with the Boeing Digital Technical Documents application.
- 3. Open the .pk3 file using the unzip utility.
- 4. Extract the PDF file located in the zip archive.
- 5. Open the PDF file using Adobe® Reader®.
Can I change my default print settings?
No. When the Boeing Digital Technical Documents version 2 application is operating, the default print setting will be to print the current page.
