Turkmenistan Airlines Chooses The Boeing 757 To Expand Its Fleet

SEATTLE, Wash., Jan. 11, 2000 -- The Boeing Company today confirmed an order from Turkmenistan Airlines for one additional 757-200. This definitive agreement was signed in late December 1999 and is valued at approximately $67 million.

This is a new order not previously accounted for in cumulative order totals published by Boeing on Dec. 15. This order - in addition to four other orders placed during the last week of Dec. - brings the company's number of orders for 1999 to 391 commercial airplanes.

The new 757-200 is scheduled for delivery in January 2001. When delivered, the new airplane will join Turkmenistan Airlines' fleet of three Boeing 757-200s, three 737-300s, and several Russian-built aircraft.

"The current 757-200s in our fleet have exceeded our expectations in terms of reliability, maintainability, and economic returns," said Ilyas Berdiev, Chief Executive - National Authority "Tukmenhovayollari." "These results have allowed us to increase the utilization of the 757s and provide our passengers with more frequent flights to various destinations."

This 757-200 order is part of Turkmenistan Airlines' plan to modernize its fleet with Boeing jetliners. The initial implementation of the plan took place in 1992 when Turkmenistan Airlines became the first airline in the Commonwealth of Independent States to purchase an airplane from Boeing.

"Turkmenistan Airlines is operating in an important, emerging area of the world," said Doug Groseclose, Boeing Commercial Airplanes vice president - South Asia/Pacific, Africa, and Middle East Sales. "Boeing is pleased to be a part of Turkmenistan Airlines' success, and looks forward to contributing to the airline's continued success in the future."

The twin engine 757-200 is a medium-to-long range jetliner with exceptional fuel efficiency, low noise levels and increased passenger comfort. The outstanding performance of the 757-200 enables it to excel in the challenging operating environments characteristic of emerging markets. The 757-200's performance capability and excellent operating costs make it a favorite with airline planners. Carriers competing in today's rapidly evolving, highly competitive environment depend on the 757's flexibility to adapt to ever changing market conditions. To date, 55 customers have ordered 984 Boeing 757s - including this order.
