Local Strategies
The over-arching goal of the civic category is to create strong, vibrant and thriving communities in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties where people are engaged and active in the community. The Boeing Company's charitable investments in the area of civic support innovative and collaborative community building initiatives by using the following strategies.
- 1. Boeing recognizes that the strength of the nonprofit sector is a measurement of the civic health of the region and that we can leverage our charitable resources by ensuring that our nonprofit partners are functioning efficiently. With this goal in mind, Boeing supports capacity building of the non-profit sector by providing grants that help strengthen an organization through strategic planning, technical assistance, leadership building, board development and other similar type of support.
- 2. Boeing supports regional adult community leadership programs with the goal of developing effective and informed community leaders to strengthen our region. Boeing seeks to ensure that our region has a continuing pool of well-informed and committed community leaders. Examples of Boeing grantees in this area include Leadership Tomorrow, Leadership Eastside, Leadership Institute South Puget Sound, and Leadership Snohomish County.
- 3. Boeing seeks to foster social capital and civic engagement among citizens by supporting programs that inform, educate and convene citizens about relevant and timely topics affecting the Puget Sound area. Emphasis is given to programs that reach out to diverse audiences.
- 4. In an effort to address the needs of the growing immigrant and refugee populations in the Puget Sound area, Boeing supports community building initiatives in these communities. The focus of this strategy is on issues, not specific populations. Examples include programs that build leadership, strengthen the capacity of nonprofit organizations, and promote voter engagement and civic education.
- 5. To a very limited degree, Boeing provides support for civic gathering spaces that foster community building. Consideration will only be given to projects that demonstrate a wide public use of the space.
