Boeing Exceptional Volunteer Service Award
What is skills-based volunteerism?
Skills-based volunteerism occurs when employees volunteer their professional skills, experience and leadership to address the needs of our communities. Employees who apply the skills gained from their work experiences to problems facing our communities, have the potential to exponentially increase their impact on their communities.
Do employees have to use the skills they use in their current position to be eligible for this award?
No. It is important to note that the skills applied to a volunteer activity do not have to be those skills used in the volunteer's current position at Boeing. For example:
Anyone can utilize leadership skills in a volunteer effort, whether or not one has a leadership role at Boeing. In fact, a volunteer can develop leadership skills outside of Boeing through volunteer service and then apply these skills at work - another bonus to skills-based volunteerism.
- Apply Lean or Lean+ skills to almost any volunteer effort - there's no need to be a formal Boeing Lean+ specialist.
- Employees who have gained advanced computing skills in their careers, but don't use them in their current jobs, can still apply those skills to volunteer service.
- A volunteer does not need an official project manager title at Boeing to plan a nonprofit's fund-raising event - anyone with good organizational and project management skills can do so.
Who is eligible for this award?
Nominees must be current employees of The Boeing Company (or one of its wholly owned subsidiaries - direct or indirect) in good standing on the active payroll for a minimum of one year. Contract employees and retirees are not eligible.
What types of organizations are eligible to receive the grant?
The organization for which the volunteer work is done must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or international equivalent. Primary/secondary and higher education institutions and accredited technical schools (and their international equivalents) also are eligible. The organization should be in good standing within the community.
Are religious organizations eligible?
No. Religious activities, in whole or in part, for the purpose of furthering religious doctrine are not eligible. Please refer to the Grant Guidelines, Eligibility/Exclusions for Boeing Charitable Trust Grants for an extensive list of exclusions.
Who can nominate an employee for the award?
Employees may nominate themselves or be nominated by a fellow employee, manager, the nonprofit benefiting from the volunteer work, a family member or friend. If not a self-nomination, nominees must be informed of their nomination prior to submission.
What type of volunteer service is eligible?
The volunteer service should be done on the employee's own time. Eligible volunteer service excludes personal financial support and work on company time (including ECF, loaned employees, and nonprofit board service on behalf of the company).
Who will choose the winner and finalists?
Nominations will be reviewed initially by a screening committee composed of members of the Employee Volunteer Council, a cross-functional, enterprise-wide group of volunteer leaders. The diversity of screening committee members ensures a comprehensive, balanced review and reflects a "One Boeing" approach to the review process.
The screening committee will forward the top 10 percent of nominations received to a formal awards selection committee composed of the GCC vice president and the GCC directors for BCA, IDS, Boeing International and GCC Strategic Programs.
NOTE: To ensure impartiality in the review process, identifying information (such as nominee name, business unit/function, etc.) will be taken off the nomination forms prior to being reviewed by the screening and awards committees.
Why do you only want to hear about volunteer service for one nonprofit, when an employee might volunteer for many other organizations?
Concentrating on an employee's service for one nonprofit rather than many will help reviewers gain a deeper understanding of what and how particular skills were used and the impact the employee had on the nonprofit and the community.
