The McDonnell F-4 Phantom II was one of the most versatile fighters ever flown. A total of 5,507 Phantoms were built between 1959 and 1979. In 1961 an F-4 set the world speed record at 1,604 miles per hour on a 15-mile route. That’s well over Mach 2, or twice the speed of sound.
