Background:

Boeing has a commitment to producing environmentally preferred products. The company actively works to minimize or avoid the use of potentially hazardous materials, including hexavalent chromium. Boeing has worked with suppliers to identify and qualify non-chromated coatings for use in fuel tanks.

Results:

Boeing Material and Process Technology (M&PT) has tentatively qualified PRC-Desoto CA7501A and CA7501B and SICO Inc. Base 577-635, Cure (Hardener) 576-09, Thinner 580-026.

Facilities: Surface preparation, mixing, application, curing, and rework areas shall be adequately ventilated and protected from uncontrolled spray, dust, fumes, and particulate matter.
Manufacturing: Care should be taken during abrading to prevent exposing or damaging fiberglass, aramid, or carbon fibers. Damaged or exposed fibers are cause for rejection of parts.
Maintenance: The cured coating may appear glossy as pot life increases. This appearance is acceptable and should not warrant hardware rejection.
