Description of Problem: Environmental regulations in many areas require use of processes with lower Volatile Organic Compound emissions. This information sheet is designed to provide detailed information not included in process specifications.

Note: This does not supersede specification requirements or the qualified products list.

Manufacturing Information: Equipment Cleanup
Equipment cleaning operations are typically areas of high solvent usage. Good work practices are key to lower solvent emissions. Four are identified by Aerospace NESHAP:

  1. 1. An enclosed system (be sure to keep fire safety concerns in mind)
  2. 2. Non-atomized cleaning -- forcing solvent through the gun and capture solvent in a container that is closed when not in use,
  3. 3. Disassembled spray gun cleaning (hand cleaning) in a vat which shall remain closed during the soaking period and when not inserting or removing components, and
  4. 4. Atomized cleaning into a waste container fitted with a device designed to capture the solvent emissions.

To further reduce emissions you may use a lower vapor pressure solvent. When choosing a replacement solvent, it is preferred to clean materials from equipment using corresponding solvents (e.g. lacquer thinner for lacquers, water for waterborne). Final flush should be with clean solvent.

Fish eyes, solvent pop, or paint adhesion problems can result from using contaminated or incompatible solvents.

Solvents qualified to pre-paint cleaning in BAC 5750 are more likely to be compatible with paints.
