Pre-Seal and Post-Seal Solvent Cleaning

Low Voc Coatings

Subject: Pre-Seal and Post-Seal Solvent Cleaning

Reference: BAC 5000 General Sealing, Revision W, 17-JAN-2000

Description of Problem: Environmental regulations in many areas require use of products with lower vapor pressure. New products have been qualified. Many require process adjustment. This information sheet is designed to provide detailed information not included in process specifications.

Note: This does not supersede specification requirements or the qualified products list.

Manufacturing Information: Using low vapor pressure solvents for seal cleaning

Pre seal cleaning
Low vapor pressure solvents evaporate slowly and can be easily trapped in cracks and faying joints. Seal will not stick to damp, solvent soaked surfaces. Solvent is not to be left to dry on the assembly but should be wiped dry with an approved clean rag before sealing per spec.

Preventative Cleaning
Removal of cured sealant from structure is difficult and leaves a stain that may or may not come off with the use of solvents. To eliminate time consuming cleaning operations down stream, it is recommended that excess and stray sealant be removed while the sealant is still wet with an approved solvent. MPK is a good low vapor pressure alternative for cleaning wet seal.

BAC 5000 Section 5 Qualified Solvents with vapor pressure less than 45 mm Hg
Note: Several of the cleaners are not allowed as the final clean prior to applying the sealant. Confirm vapor pressure with your supplier prior to use.
