When to Seek Help
Professional help should be sought the moment you or a family member recognize the problem and decide that your usual coping skills may be unable to resolve it.
Personal Symptoms
Any one or more of the following personal symptoms can indicate a need for help:
- Anxious, nervous, uptight, irritable, angry, stressed
- Fearful, depressed, confused, disrupted sleep or appetite
- Moodier than usual, worrying more
- Physical deterioration, illness
- Problematic use of alcohol or drugs
- Headaches, neck tension, stomach problems
- Difficulties with family, friends, and co-workers
Work-Related Symptoms
One or more of the following work-related symptoms can indicate a need for help:
- Accidents
- Missed deadlines
- Bad decisions
- Complaints from customers
- Alternate periods of high and low productivity
- Difficulty in concentrating, handling complex assignments, or recalling instructions or details
- Problems with attendance requirements
- Troubled relationships with bosses and co-workers
Legal Issues
These legal issues might indicate a need for help:
- Domestic violence
- DUI
- Child abuse
- Bankruptcy
