F/A-18 Hornet (First Flight 1978)

The multi mission F/A-18 Hornet strike fighter is leading naval aviation into the 21st century. In both its current versions and in the upgraded E/F series, the Hornet will remain the centerpiece of U.S. Navy and Marine Corps tactical aviation for many decades. The F/A-18 flew for the first time on Nov. 18, 1978 and entered service in 1983. In November 1989, deliveries of night-attack Hornets began. Since February 1992, Marine F/A-18Ds have been delivered with provisions for reconnaissance. The combat-proven Hornet has been selected for service by the air arms of eight allied nations.
