Delta IV Liquid Oxygen Tank Passes Acceptance Test

CAPE CANAVERAL AIR STATION, Fla., Dec. 10, 1999 -- The Delta IV launch pad -- Space Launch Complex 37 -- continues to take shape. Technicians recently ran the first acceptance test on the 250,000 gallon liquid-oxygen tank pictured in the foreground.

The tank, which underwent hydrostatic testing, passed with flying colors according to Mike Woolley, EELV/Delta IV senior manager Facilities and Program Support. Installing perlite insulation between the inner and outer tanks before final testing and painting will complete construction of the tank.

The Delta IV, which uses a combination of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen to power the first and second stages, also requires an 850,000 gallon liquid-hydrogen tank. The liquid-hydrogen tank is also nearing completion, as is the mobile service tower (MST), seen in the background. The MST should be topped off when the last piece of structural steel goes up near the beginning of the New Year.
