Ground-based Midcourse Defense
Aug. 16, 1999 -- A local Alabama construction firm installed the first test silo simulator operational equipment to support the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) weapon system test and development in August at The Boeing Company, Huntsville, Ala. As the Prime Contractor for GMD, Huntsville Boeing employees will use the 75-foot long test simulator launch platform to support system testing, review design and installation processes, and provide an inert training environment. The 60-ton silo must be lifted with two cranes, moved into position over the lined excavation, lowered into position, and then braced for support. The silo is then leveled, plumbed and anchored in preparation to receive a canisterized inert missile for operational testing.
