ST. LOUIS, Nov. 11, 2002 -- Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems has delivered its first autonomous underwater surveillance system to the U.S. Navy. The Long-Term Mine Reconnaissance System (LMRS) will enable the U.S. Navy to determine the existence and precise location of mines in potential threat environments so that adjustments can be made to ensure safe route for ships. First deployment is scheduled for 2005. The LMRS is another component of the integrated battlespace, a fully integrated network-centric information system that consolidates relevant data so that decision makers can mobilize, respond, and act decisively. An LMRS system consists of two 20-foot long unmanned underwater vehicles; a 60-foot robotic recovery arm; onboard handling equipment; support electronics; a shore-based depot; and a special van to transport the vehicle.
