TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 10, 2003 -- The Boeing Company (NYSE: BA) recently positioned its Electron Dynamic Devices subsidiary to offer higher-level integrated satellite payload and bus products to government and commercial satellite customers. Boeing Integrated Defense Systems, a unit of The Boeing Company, moved its Passive Microwave Devices (PMD) and Power Electronics (PE) product lines from Boeing Satellite Systems (BSS), the satellite-manufacturing arm of Boeing IDS, and integrated them into Boeing Electron Dynamic Devices, Inc. (EDD). Previously, these two product lines designed and manufactured products solely for BSS, for integration into the end item satellites.
Located in Torrance, Calif., EDD is a leading provider of high reliability radar, communications and satellite products to space and defense customers.
"With these product lines now at EDD, we can offer their experience, along with their state-of-the-art products and capabilities, to the external satellite market," said Chris Stephens, general manager of EDD. "These new product lines expand our portfolio and offer more value to our customers."
Historically a leading supplier of highly reliable traveling wave tubes (TWTs) and amplifiers (TWTAs) and more recently linearized TWTAs, EDD can now offer customers nearly an entire payload power section, from the input multiplexers and switches through the channel amplified linearized TWTAs, to the output multiplexers, switches, and filters. EDD also offers a variety of filters and power supplies for phased-array based applications.
EDD's Passive Microwave Devices group provides full design, test and manufacturing capability for input and output multiplexers, filters, diplexers, triplexers, ferrite devices and electro-mechanical switches for space applications. The group's expertise spans from UHF to the V-Band operating frequency range. Through the use of both High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) software and internally developed computer programs, Passive Microwave Devices design engineers also provide unit high power design, analysis and test capability for the prevention of multipaction, critical pressure breakdown and passive intermodulation (PIM) generation.
The Power Electronics group, for three decades a world class provider of high reliability spacecraft power electronics products, offers complete payload and bus power distribution and power management systems. This includes space-qualified high- and low-voltage power supplies, DC/DC converters, power controllers, bus regulation, and solar panel management and battery management units and modules. The group also provides radiation-hardened solutions for the military space environment and have full in-house design, manufacturing, and integration and test capability.
This move to EDD ensures that these two product lines will retain the same superior quality, high reliability and proven space heritage as EDD's traditional products.
