Launched in November 2005, the Secure Border Initiative (SBI) is a comprehensive multi-year plan established by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to secure America's borders and reduce illegal cross-border activity. SBI -- which focuses on effective integration of border security programs -- aims to gain effective control of our nation's borders through the optimal mix of technology, infrastructure, and enforcement personnel.
The transformational SBInet program provides greater situational awareness and aims to reduce the United States' vulnerability to terrorism, protect national interests and provide Border Patrol agents along the U.S. land borders with Mexico and Canada the tools needed to immediately detect an illegal entry, effectively respond to the entry, and bring the situation to the appropriate law enforcement resolution.
Boeing earned the three-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity SBInet contract in 2006. The contract was extended for one year in September 2009.
