BOEING TO DELIVER "JEKYLL & HYDE" BY SATELLITE
FOR BROADWAY TELEVISION NETWORK
Digital Satellite Transmission Delivers Alternative Content in Highest Quality
LOS ANGELES, April 27, 2001 -- Boeing digital cinema is delivering by satellite its first "alternative" program, Broadway Television Network's production of the Broadway hit "Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical."
The musical will be screened in high definition and 5.1 surround sound for an invited audience on May 1 at the Pacific Theatre in Los Angeles, operated by the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television's Entertainment Technology Center. Boeing Satellite Systems (BSS), a unit of The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA), is co-hosting the event with Broadway Television Network and Christie Digital Systems, Inc. BSS first digitally transmitted the musical for Broadway Television Network to seven cinema venues across the country for public-ticketed exhibitions on March 10.
The presentation of "Jekyll & Hyde" represents the first alternative program distributed for digital cinema display via Boeing digital cinema's secure end-to-end communication system. Boeing digital cinema is a network system that digitally transmits first-run films and other alternative media directly to movie theatres via satellite-based and fiber-optic networks.
"In our earlier demonstrations, we showed how Boeing digital cinema's capability works with first-run motion pictures," said Randy H. Brinkley, president of Boeing Satellite Systems. "Now, with the showing of 'Jekyll & Hyde,' we are proving how theater owners can really open their doors and expand revenues by screening alternative programs such as Broadway musicals, sporting events, rock concerts and corporate training or distance learning in their local theaters. By using digital cinema, exhibitors now have a new freedom and more revenue opportunities."
As digital high-definition media, "Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical" will retain the clarity and quality of the live performance. Miramax Films' "Bounce" was the first film distributed using Boeing's technology in November 2000, and Dimension Films' "Spy Kids" was the first full-length film digitally transmitted for a theatrical premiere in March 2001 by Boeing digital cinema.
Broadway Television Network captured "Jekyll & Hyde" live in performance on Broadway at the Plymouth Theatre in New York. The production stars David Hasselhoff in the dual title roles and features Broadway performers Coleen Sexton as Lucy, Andrea Rivette as Emma, George Merritt as Mr. Utterson and Barrie Ingham as Sir Danvers.
"Jekyll & Hyde" brings new life to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story, an evocative tale of romance and the epic battle between good and evil. A whirlwind odyssey pitting man against himself is set in motion when the brilliant Dr. Jekyll's medical experiment backfires, giving life to Edward Hyde, his evil alter ego. The production broke the house record at the Plymouth Theatre on three occasions, and additionally, the show has won a legion of repeat visitors, dubbed by the press as "Jekkies," with some hardcore fans having seen the show hundreds of times.
Broadway Television Network is the first-to-market leader in the production and worldwide distribution of Broadway musicals captured live-in-performance for digital cinemas, cable and satellite pay-per-view systems, home video, Internet video on demand, cable and broadcast television. The company also promotes and sells its events and products on its Internet website, BroadwayOnline.com.
Boeing digital cinema relies on proven Boeing satellite technology honed during the company's nearly four decades in the satellite telecommunications field. The service also is backed by BSS' years of secure data delivery for the U.S. government and incorporates the latest in big systems satellite communication design and technology.
