In 1997 he earned a master of business management degree from Stanford Graduate School of Business in Palo Alto, Calif.

Prior to his post at Boeing IDS, Stephens served as vice president and chief financial officer of BSS from October 2000 to January 2002, where he was responsible for the financial management activities of BSS and its subsidiaries, including Boeing EDD. Earlier, Stephens was vice president in charge of the successful transition to Boeing, following Boeing's acquisition of the former Hughes Space and Communications (HSC) Company, and served as vice president of finance operations at HSC. He joined HSC from AlliedSignal in 1999. He earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting in 1986 from King's College, Wilkes-Barre, Penn., and a master of business administration from Virginia Tech's Pamplin School of Business in 1995.
