HUGHES SPACE AND COMMUNICATIONS PROMOTES 5 TO VICE PRESIDENT
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Feb. 25, 1997 -- Satellite manufacturer Hughes Space and Communications
Company (HSC) promoted five business executives this month to vice president.
They are Michael J. Houterman, 54, of Manhattan Beach; Ken K. Kobayashi, 60, of Torrance; Mark Shahriary, 52, of Santa Monica; Ronald V. Swanson, 55, of Rancho Palos Verdes; and Ronald D. Symmes, 50, of Manhattan Beach.
The five, all long-time employees, also became members of the HSC policy board. HSC, a unit of Hughes Electronics Corporation, is the world's leading commercial communications satellite manufacturer and a major supplier of spacecraft for government communications and space exploration. The earnings of Hughes Electronics are used to calculate the earnings per share attributable to GMH (NYSE symbol) common stock.
Houterman and Swanson share responsibility for commercial business at HSC. Houterman joined Hughes in 1964, and most recently was general manager for commercial business development. Swanson has been with Hughes for 32 years, and previously was general manager for government business development. He also heads a new HSC organization called Hughes Government Services.
Shahriary and Symmes join Vice President Jeffrey E. Grant in supervising HSC operations. Shahriary joined Hughes in 1983, and most recently was deputy general manager overseeing the HSC business units that build satellite components. Symmes, a 23-year Hughes employee, had been in charge of systems engineering analysis and operations.
Kobayashi joins the team of Vice Presidents Michael Gianelli and Robert Rankine in overseeing government business. Kobayashi, who joined Hughes in 1964, most recently was general manager for government systems applications.
The management team is led by Donald L. Cromer, who has been president of HSC since October 1993. HSC employs about 7,200 people.
