MIKE HOUTERMAN NEW PRESIDENT OF HUGHES SPACE AND COMMUNICATIONS INTERNATIONAL
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., March 27, 1997 -- Michael J. Houterman has been named president of
Hughes Space and Communications International, Inc. (HSCI), which markets satellite systems
internationally for Hughes Electronics Corporation.
Houterman, of Manhattan Beach, assumes these new duties along with those as a vice president for commercial operations at Hughes Space and Communications Company (HSC), the world's leading satellite manufacturer. He has been with Hughes since 1964, working on a variety of commercial satellite programs and in key leadership roles.
Houterman fills the vacancy created when Frank A. Taormina left HSC and HSCI to become executive vice president of Hughes Communications, Inc. (HCI), the world's leading private satellite operator.
Harold E. McDonnell, a long-time HCI executive, has moved to HSC and HSCI. McDonnell, of Rancho Palos Verdes, has been named executive vice president of HSCI, and also a vice president for commercial operations at HSC. He had been with HCI for 10 years, most recently as executive vice president and chief operating officer. One of the business areas he oversaw at HCI, launch vehicle acquisitions, moves with McDonnell to HSCI.
HSCI named Paul Bachar, of Rancho Palos Verdes, as executive vice president, international. For the last six years, he directed the New Venture Organization within Hughes Telecommunications and Space Company. In that role, he was responsible for identifying and evaluating new business ventures and long-range strategies derived from the company's satellite technologies and services. Bachar has been with Hughes since 1987.
HSC also has hired Wah L. Lim as vice president for technology and development. Lim, of Santa Ana, comes to Hughes from Loral Space and Communications Ltd., where he was corporate vice president of technology and operations.
All the new executives report to Donald L. Cromer, president of HSC and chairman of HSCI. HSCI is a subsidiary of HSC. HSC and HCI are business units within Hughes Telecommunications and Space Company (HTS). HTS is a unit of Hughes Electronics. The earnings of Hughes Electronics are used to calculate the earnings per share attributable to GMH (NYSE symbol) common stock.
