LOS ANGELES, Aug. 4, 1997 -- Hughes Space and Communications International, Inc., (HSCI) has named Theodore "Ted" McFarland as vice president, Southeast Asia. McFarland will be located in Hughes' Kuala Lumpur office.

Serving as the Malaysian country manager, McFarland will have as his primary responsibility the growth of the company's telecommunications business -- satellites, satellite services, direct-to-home broadcasting and network systems businesses -- throughout the Pacific Rim region.

HSCI President Michael J. Houterman said: "The Pacific Rim is, without exception, the world's most rapidly expanding telecommunications marketplace. Ted's experience in Southeast Asia will be a definite asset to Hughes' continued success in this important, rapid-growth region. This appointment strengthens and reinforces Hughes' commitment as a long-term partner in developing enhanced communications capability for the region."

McFarland has an extensive background in telecommunications, satellite systems, cable and satellite distribution, military and aerospace industries in Asia. He has held a variety of senior management positions at Hughes and was managing director, Hughes Asia Pacific (Hong Kong) Ltd., before leaving in July 1994. In the interim he was president and chief executive officer of Afro-Asian Satellite Communications Ltd., and most recently was president of Turner International Asia Pacific Ltd., Hong Kong. McFarland served as the president of the Cable and Satellite Broadcast Association of Asia (CASBAA) in 1995/1996 and remains on its board.

McFarland obtained a bachelor of science degree and a master of arts in business administration at San Diego State University.
