HUGHES SPACE AND COMMUNICATIONS PROMOTES SHAHRIARY TO EXECUTIVE VP

LOS ANGELES, July 01, 1998 -- Hughes Space and Communications Company has named Mark Shahriary as executive vice president. Shahriary will lead the day-to-day operations of the $2.5 billion company, reporting to Donald L. Cromer, president of Hughes Space and Communications Company.

Hughes Space and Communications Company, the world's leading manufacturer of geostationary commercial communications satellites, recently received its 11th new satellite order of the year, and launched its 169th communications satellite last month. Having built about one-third of the active satellites in geosynchronous orbit today, Hughes has more than 1,000 years of on-orbit experience.

Previously, Shahriary oversaw the planning and manufacturing support for Hughes Space and Communications Company's new customers as their programs moved into production. He was named to this position in January 1997.

Shahriary joined Hughes in 1983 as manager of new technology. In 1989 he became head of the communications electronics business unit, which designs, develops and produces commercial satellite payloads. Later he became a general manager for engineering and manufacturing, responsible for the departments which build satellite components.

A resident of Santa Monica, Calif., Shahriary received his bachelor's degree and master's degree in electrical engineering in 1971 and 1972 from California State University, Los Angeles. In 1977 he received a Ph.D. in solid state engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles.
