TIG KREKEL NAMED PRESIDENT, CEO OF HUGHES SPACE AND COMMUNICATIONS COMPANY
El Segundo, Jan. 7, 1999 -- Tig H. Krekel has been elected president and chief executive officer of Hughes Space and Communications Company (HSC), a unit of Hughes Electronics Corporation. He also was elected a senior vice president of Hughes Electronics and named a member of the Hughes Electronics executive committee and management committee. HSC is the world's leading geostationary commercial communications satellite manufacturer, having built nearly 40 percent of those in operation.
Krekel, 45, joins Hughes from AlliedSignal, Inc., where he was president and chief executive officer of AlliedSignal Aerospace Equipment Systems of Torrance, Calif. Krekel succeeds Donald Cromer, who retired Dec. 1, 1998.
AlliedSignal Aerospace Equipment Systems is the world's largest manufacturer of aircraft systems and components. With sales approaching $3 billion, it is the largest and most profitable unit of AlliedSignal and was named 1998 Supplier of the Year by both Boeing and American Airlines.

Krekel joined AlliedSignal in 1992 as director of Garrett AiResearch Strategic Planning, Mergers and Acquisitions, and served in several positions including vice president and general manager of Environmental Control Systems in 1997 before being named president and CEO of Aerospace Equipment Systems.
His background includes positions at Decair Corporation, an aviation services business as president and CEO; Poloron Products, Inc., a diversified manufacturing firm as divisional manager and assistant to the president; and Jet America, Inc., a charter airline and services company as vice president of Operations.
A mechanical and nuclear engineer, Krekel has a bachelor's degree from the United States Naval Academy and an MBA degree from Stanford Graduate School of Business. He holds an Airline Transport Pilot's License and has more than 3,000 hours of flight time in jet and rotary-wing aircraft.
The earnings of Hughes Electronics are used to calculate the earnings per share attributable to GMH (NYSE symbol) common stock.
