Brinkley comes to Hughes with more than 32 years of experience. Most recently, Brinkley was a senior executive at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, responsible for two of the agency's most technically challenging programs, the Hubble Space Telescope repair mission and the International Space Station program.
"Randy brings a wealth of industry experience and knowledge to Hughes, and we know that he will be a tremendous asset to both our firm and our customers," said Tig H. Krekel, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hughes Space and Communications Company. "I have every confidence that under his leadership our satellites will continue to set new records, achieve new capabilities, and ensure the success of our customers."
In this newly created position, Brinkley will report directly to Krekel and will have responsibility for the company's four major markets: Department of Defense-Civil, National Security, Digital Processing and Fixed Satellite Service/Broadcast Satellite Service. He will also be responsible for the Hughes Launch Services acquisition group.
Brinkley was recently honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., where NASA Administrator Daniel P. Goldin presented him with the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. This year, the National Space Club presented Brinkley and his team with the U.S. Space Foundation's Space Achievement Award. He was also this year's recipient of the Nelson P. Jackson Aerospace Award, which was presented by the National Space Club. His work on the Hubble program earned him the prestigious Collier Trophy in 1993.
Prior to joining NASA, Brinkley held a key management position with McDonnell Douglas Corporation, responsible for the strategic planning and resource allocation for advanced aircraft systems and technologies.
Brinkley retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after 25 years of service in 1990. A Top Gun graduate, he accumulated more than 4,000 flight hours in 42 different types of aircraft, including the F-18 Hornet and the AV-8B Harrier.
Brinkley holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of North Carolina and a master of science degree from Boston University. He is also a graduate of the Marine Corps Engineers School and the NATO Defense College.
"As Hughes Space and Communications Company moves into the next century, we move forward with a strong leadership team that will motivate and drive performance in a competitive atmosphere of increasingly demanding goals," said Krekel. "We are the world's largest manufacturer of communications satellites. In the coming years, we will increase our market leadership position and will continue to offer the best-value, most reliable and technically advanced telecommunications systems available anywhere.
