HUGHES AWARDED CONTRACT FOR NRO PROGRAM

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Sept. 24, 1999 -- Hughes Space and Communications Company (HSC), teamed with the Boeing Company, has been awarded a major part of a Future Imagery Architecture (FIA) contract by the National Reconnaissance Office. HSC will assume an important design and manufacturing role for the multi-year program, in addition to providing key elements of systems engineering for the program. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"The Hughes/Boeing team clearly had the requisite knowledge and background to meet the specific requirements of the FIA program," said Tig H. Krekel, president and chief executive officer of HSC. "This award marks our entry into a new business area and is a continuation of our commitment and proud tradition of service in the interest of national security."

HSC is the world's leading manufacturer of commercial communications satellites, having built nearly 40 percent of those in operation. It also is a major supplier of spacecraft and equipment to the U.S. government, and a builder of weather satellites for the United States and Japan. HSC is a unit of Hughes Electronics Corporation. The earnings of Hughes Electronics are used to calculate the earnings per share attributable to GMH (NYSE symbol) common stock.
