The satellite, DIRECTV 1-R, is an HS 601HP model. The new satellite will join DIRECTV's existing fleet of Hughes-built DBS satellites at 101 degrees West longitude. DIRECTV 1-R will carry 16 Ku-band transponders. With 7.5 kilowatts, it will deliver 50 percent more power than its predecessor, a classic HS 601 model satellite. This will allow DIRECTV to add 20 channels for expanded direct-to-home programming services.
"The addition of DIRECTV 1-R to our satellite fleet adds strength and versatility to our broadcasting platform," said Eddy W. Hartenstein, president of DIRECTV. "With 1-R in place, DIRECTV will have the ability to offer its customers a variety of new programming services, enhance its prospects for future growth and maintain its exemplary record for signal reliability."
The satellite will be delivered in orbit. Hughes has long-term agreements with most major launch service providers, enabling it to offer its customers a choice of timely and cost-effective launches. The selection of a launch vehicle will be announced in the next few months.
"Our expanded manufacturing and testing facilities added last year, along with our parts inventory process, will allow Hughes to provide DIRECTV with a new satellite in a short time frame," said Tig H. Krekel, HSC president and chief executive officer.
Both HSC and DIRECTV are units of Hughes Electronics Corporation. HSC is the
world's leading manufacturer of commercial communications satellites.
