35 YEARS OF SERVICE -- Hughes Space and Communications Company is celebrating 35 years in the satellite telecommunications business. On July 26, 1963, Hughes made history and revolutionized the communications industry with the launch of Syncom, the world's first geosynchronous satellite. Since then, Hughes' satellites have logged more than 9 million hours of service, the equivalent of 1,000 years. Syncom could relay only one TV channel; today a Hughes satellite can transmit more than 300 channels. Hughes has built 168 commercial and scientific spacecraft, excluding classified national security satellites. One in three of the approximately 180 communications satellites in geosynchronous orbit today were built by Hughes.
