ASIA'S NEWEST -- AsiaSat 3S, a 9,900-watt spacecraft built by Hughes Space and Communications Company, is shown in Hughes' Integrated Satellite Factory prior to being shipped for a March 1999 Proton launch in Baikonur, Kazakhstan. Built for the Asia Satellite Telecommunications Co., Ltd., the powerful AsiaSat 3S will deliver television and telecommunications service throughout Asia, the Middle East, Australasia, and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The satellite features 28 C-band and 16 Ku-band transponders. AsiaSat 3S is designed to provide a minimum of 15 years of service from its orbital position of 105.5 degrees East longitude. The new satellite will replace AsiaSat 1, an HS 376 spacecraft launched in 1990.
