Asia Satellite Telecommunications Company Limited (AsiaSat) of Hong Kong signed the order for the powerful spacecraft in September 2000 and it will join two other Hughes-built satellites in the AsiaSat fleet. The satellite uses gallium arsenide solar arrays to provide more than 8 kilowatts total power. AsiaSat 4 will provide broadcast, telecommunications and broadband multimedia services to the Asia Pacific region and direct-to-home broadcast services to Hong Kong. AsiaSat 4 will carry 58 transponders, 28 active and six spare in C-band, and 20 active and four spare in Ku-band. AsiaSat 4 is scheduled to provide at least 15 years of service from its orbital position of 122 degrees East longitude.
