PREPARING FOR LAUNCH - DIRECTV-4S, a Boeing 601HP satellite built by Boeing Satellite Systems, undergoes final preparations before shipment for its planned launch aboard an Ariane 44LP rocket on Nov. 26. Weighing 9,400 pounds fully fueled at launch, the spacecraft will operate at the Ku-band frequency and carry two payloads: one using spot beams for local channels, the other providing a national beam. Thirty-eight traveling wave-tube amplifiers (TWTAs) with output power levels ranging from 30 watts to 88 watts will support broadcast to local channels. The national beam payload will carry two active Ku-band transponders with further capability for an additional two active high power and six active low power transponders.
