THERMAL TEST -- The Galaxy VIII-i spacecraft is shown being prepared for a thermal-vacuum test in Hughes Space and Communications Company facilities. During the test, heater elements are attached to the side radiator panels of the satellite, and near its high-power traveling-wave tube amplifiers. The satellite is then enclosed in a cylindrical vacuum chamber. The satellite undergoes a series of hot and cold cycles that simulate the extreme temperatures of space. Much of the work in producing a Hughes satellite involves testing, which gives Hughes the best record in the industry of on-orbit reliability. Galaxy VIII-i is an HS 601HP high-power satellite built for PanAmSat Corporation. The entire 32-transponder payload will be used by Galaxy Latin AmericaTM for its DIRECTV® service. Launch will be aboard an Atlas IIAS rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Station, Fla., in December 1997.
