HEAT WAVE -- A Hughes Space and Communications Company engineer attaches a cable to the Galaxy XR satellite in preparation for thermal testing. For the test, the satellite is raised into a chamber that is vacuum-sealed and the satellite is put through numerous cycles of extreme heat and cold to simulate the harsh conditions of space. Galaxy XR, a Hughes HS 601HP model, will be PanAmSat's fifth satellite in the Galaxy® cable neighborhood at 123 degrees West longitude, serving nearly 11,000 cable television systems across the United States. It carries 48 active transponders, 24 each in C-band and Ku-band. Launch is scheduled for early 2000 aboard an Ariane 42L rocket from Kourou, French Guiana.
