| TWO GOES -- Hughes Space and Communications Company has been selected to design, integrate, and launch two Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites, known as "GOES," with options for two additional spacecraft. The GOES satellite design will be based on Hughes' popular HS 601 model spacecraft. GOES N and GOES O will be available for launch onboard a Delta III rocket in 2001 and 2003, respectively. The GOES satellites provide accurate meteorological measurements and data to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and others for use in the rapid detection and advance warning of severe storms, such as hurricanes and tornadoes. Hughes has been providing meteorological instruments and spacecraft to the United States and Japan for more than 30 years. |
