| FINAL STAGES -- The ICO F-1 satellite is shown prior to shipping from the Hughes Space and Communications Company factory for launch. This is the first of 12 being built by Hughes for ICO Global Communications, for a worldwide communications system. The satellite is a version of the popular Hughes HS 601 model, modified to accommodate the complex payload and operation in middle-earth orbit. It stands about 16 feet tall. On the wall to the right is a full-scale model of the first HS 601 satellite, which is about 12 feet tall. ICO F-1 is scheduled for launch March 12 on the Sea Launch vehicle. |
