3-2-1 LIFTOFF - A successful launch orbits a pair of Boeing-built communications satellites for two long-time customers of Boeing Satellite Systems. The Ariane 44L rocket took off from the Guiana Space Center on the northeast coast of South America on March 28, 2002, at 10:29 p.m. at the launch site (5:29 p.m. PST; 1:29 a.m. March 29 GMT). Aboard were JCSAT-8, a Boeing 601 model satellite built for Tokyo-based JSAT Corporation, and ASTRA 3A, a Boeing 376 spacecraft for SES ASTRA of Luxembourg. Both were built by Boeing Satellite Systems.
