UNIQUE TESTING - Boeing engineers monitor the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite - N (GOES) during a unique test. The test, called the dynamic interaction test, represents a major departure from normal satellite testing because it requires isolating the satellite from any external laboratory or mechanical input so that the stiffness of the satellite can be determined. Using a suspension system platform, as shown above, that satellite is isolated from receiving any mechanical input, such as people walking, doors slamming, or an earthquake. Boeing is building the GOES satellite for Goddard Space Flight Center, whose customer is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Boeing is under contract to build two GOES satellites with the options of two additional satellites.
