| WINNING TECHNOLOGY - University of Michigan college students, shown above with their solar-powered car and trophy, purchased terrestrial solar cells to power their car via the Internet at the Spectrolab e-store. Approximately 3,000 dual-junction gallium arsenide solar cells were used to power the University of Michigan "M-Pulse" solar-powered car, which took first place at the American Solar Challenge. The race, the world's longest for solar-powered vehicles, began July 15 in Chicago and followed Route 66 to Claremont, Calif. The M-Pulse took nine days to win the 2,247.5-mile race in 56 hours, 10 minutes and 46 seconds, 80 minutes and six seconds ahead of the competition.
