SWITCHBOARD IN THE SKY - The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite-I (TDRS-I), second of three Boeing 601 satellites built by Boeing Integrated Defense Systems for NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, has reached geosynchronous orbit after a six-month recovery effort. The TDRS satellites relay large volumes of user satellite transmissions—including voice, video and scientific data—from manned missions or orbiting scientific spacecraft back to ground control centers. The new satellite will bring Ka-band capability to the TDRS fleet, adding flexibility and allowing for higher data rates.
