SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH -- The Boeing-built Tracking and Data Relay Satellite, TDRS-I, was successfully launched on March 8, 2002 on an Atlas IIA rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Liftoff occurred at 5:59 pm EST. Thirty-six minutes later, satellite operators at Boeing Satellite Systems received the satellite's first signals, confirming that all systems are operating normally. TDRS-I is the second of three satellites being built by Boeing for NASA. The third, TDRS-J, is scheduled to launch in November 2002.
